In honor of its fourth anniversary this month, Taste Carolina Gourmet Food Tours is offering six Durham/ Chapel Hill/ Carrboro/ Hillsborough events featuring food artisans and chefs. These six events will showcase how artisans and chefs partner with local farmers to use seasonal ingredients in their products and dishes. The events are intended to be experienced as a series, and tickets are on sale in packages of six events ($249), five ($215), four ($180), or three ($138). Thursday, April 18th, 2013, 6pm. Chapel Hill Creamery Tour and Acme Cheese Dinner. Enjoy a tour of Chapel Hill Creamery’s farm followed by dinner at Acme! Twelve years ago, Flo Hawley and Portia McKnight, owners and operators of Chapel Hill Creamery, purchased a few Jersey cows to begin their dairy. They’ve been making outstanding cheese using the rich milk of a now much larger herd of Jerseys, raised on pasture, ever since. Kevin Callaghan opened Acme Food & Beverage Co. in 1998. Inspired by local ingredients and seasonal southern recipes, Kevin is a fixture at farmers’ markets and local foodie events. Arrive at Chapel Hill Creamery at 6pm sharp for a tour of the farm. Dinner at Acme featuring Flo and Portia’s cheeses will follow.
Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013, 6:15pm.The Farmers’ Daughter and Farmhand Foods Cooking Demonstration and Dinner. With Piedmont Wine Imports at Eastern Carolina Organics. Experience local on a whole new level! Farmer-owned Eastern Carolina Organics markets and distributes organic, locally-grown produce. This event will take place at ECO’s warehouse, where Farmhand Foods also operates. Farmhand Foods aggregates and distributes local, pasture-raised meats. Sales and Distribution Manager Drew Brown, former chef and owner of Piedmont restaurant, will join April McGreger for a cooking demonstration. April and Drew will also team up to prepare a delicious dinner. April McGreger, The Farmer’s Daughter, pickles and preserves local produce into incredible jarred products that she sells at local farmers’ markets in Durham and Carrboro. Jay Murrie, owner of Piedmont Wine Imports, a business focused on sustainable vineyards in Europe, will choose and present the wines to pair with dinner. Arrive at Eastern Carolina Organics at 6:15.
Tuesday, April 30th, 2013, 6pm.Cackalacky Hot Sauce, Fullsteam Brewery, Pie Pushers, American Meltdown, and The Parlour: An Amalgamation. Beer, hot sauce, food trucks, and ice cream? Perfect! Learn about these five local companies while enjoying food and drink. Sean Wilson’s mission is to showcase local ingredients in his plow-to-pint beers. Fullsteam Brewery, which he founded in 2010, has become Durham’s community gathering space. His award-winning beers can be found throughout the Southeast. Page Skelton created Cackalacky hot sauce from sweet potatoes over ten years ago. His brand has become one of the most recognizable local products, and it is now sold all over the United States. Page and Sean collaborated to create Ginger Pale Ale last year. Becky and Mike Hacker’s Pie Pushers truck serves up a mobile feast of popular pizzas with scratch made crust and locally-sourced toppings. Alycia and Paul Inserra’s unique gourmet melts and their truck, American Meltdown, have garnered a huge following. Chefs Mike and Paul will create off-menu items for this dinner. Yoni and Vanessa Mazuz’s gourmet ice cream business, The Parlour, consists of an ice cream bus and a shop in downtown Durham (opening in April). Flavors such as Salted Caramel and Toasted Coconut are made using the best ingredients they can find. The evening will begin with a tour of Fullsteam’s Brewery and a beer tasting. Over dinner prepared by Pie Pushers, American Meltdown, and The Parlour and featuring Cackalacky products, we’ll talk with owners and operators of the businesses collaborating on this event. Arrive at Fullsteam at 6pm sharp. Dinner will take place inside the brewery.
Tuesday, May 7th, 2013, 6:00pm.TOPO Vodka Distillery and The Crunkleton. Learn the art of the cocktail featuring local, organic vodka. Gary Crunkleton showcases top-notch ingredients, from the spirits he uses in his cocktails to the snacks of charcuterie and cheese he features on the menu at his bar, The Crunkleton. Top of the Hill owner, Scott Maitland, and Spirit Guide, Esteban McMahan’s four years of planning has yielded a world-class micro-distillery, TOPO, producing vodka, whiskey, and gin made from organic North Carolina wheat. We’ll meet at The Crunkleton before heading to TOPO Distillery for a tour and tasting. Afterward, we’ll head back to The Crunkleton for a TOPO cocktail, snacks, and a demonstration by Gary. Meet at The Crunkleton at 6:00 sharp. This event does not include a full dinner.
Tuesday, May 14th, 2013, 6pm.Durham Taquerias and LocoPops Tour. Come explore Durham’s taquerias followed by a tour of LocoPops!La Poblana, Los Comales, and La Vaquita – these taquerias serve amazing and authentic Mexican cuisine. We’ll enjoy food at each of these three stops before heading to LocoPop’s production facility for a tour and tasting with owner, Summer Bicknell. Summer learned how to make her paletas, or popsicles, in Tlazazalca, Mexico. The dairy for her cream-based treats comes from North Carolina’s Homeland Creamery; the herbs that have inspired such flavors as Lime Basil and Pear Rosemary are sourced from the Durham sustainable agriculture program, SEEDS. You’ll enjoy hearing about Summer’s journey to create one of the coolest businesses in North Carolina. Arrive at LocoPops (2604 Hillsborough Road, Durham location) at 6pm sharp. We’ll caravan from there!
Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013, 5:45pm.Two Chicks Farm and Panciuto in Idyllic Hillsborough. Join us for a tour of Two Chicks Farm followed by dinner at Panciuto! Debbie Donnald and Audrey Lin have owned and operated Two Chicks Farm for seven years. They harvest vegetables year ‘round and sell their fresh produce and pickled goods at several area farmers’ markets: Eno River, South Durham and Western Wake. Aaron Vandermark opened Panciuto in 2006 with a mission of providing a true farm-to-fork dining experience. Nightly menus are based on what’s available locally. Aaron has been nominated for a James Beard award the last three years. Arrive at Two Chicks for a farm tour and pickling demonstration at 5:45pm sharp. You’ll leave with jars of goodness. A short drive takes us to Panciuto, where Aaron will prepare dinner featuring Audrey and Debbie’s products.
